What is Prop 50?
Proposition 50 is a constitutional amendment that will create new temporary congressional districts in CA for the 2026 mid-term elections.
Background: Trump has leaned on TX and MO to redistrict to elect more Republicans in 2026. CA is fighting back with its own redistricting to gain additional Democratic seats. Passing Prop 50 will help level the playing field with GOP states that have redistricted.
The new CA maps https://aelc.assembly.ca.goroposed-congressional-map, are only temporary. CA’s Citizens Redistricting Commission will redraw maps in 2031 based on the 2030 census.
The proposed maps are fair and proportional. Common Cause has declared them to meet its redistricting fairness criteria.
Why should I vote YES on Prop 50?
Trump wants toundermine the 2026 elections.
His voter suppression strategy: push Red states to gerrymander for additional House seats; eliminate vote by mail; require voter ID; and more.
If CA doesn’t fight back with its own redistricting, Dems have NO chance of winning back the House. If Dems lose the House again, Trump will have greater power than ever to slash Medicaid, food stamps, education, reproductive rights, scientific research, green energy and other programs on which Americans rely.
Working for its passage is the most important thing we can do right now. If we don't pass Prop 50, it is guaranteed that Dems will lose the mid-term elections.
Why should I vote to give up our Citizens Redistricting Commission (CRC)?
We are NOT giving up our CRC. Prop 50 creates 5 new temporary districts. In 2031 the CRC will once again redistrict based on the 2030 census.
Trump supports gerrymandering. When Dems win the House again, CA will support a national ban on partisan gerrymandering.
